Tectoy still in operation and continues selling 8-bit and 16-bit games with built-in games focusing on children from 5-12 years, that haven't become hard core games yet. These are considered entry-level consoles. Check the website for more information: www.tectoy.com.br

Hey Dale. Brazilian game developers have a number of strategies to workaround the endemic piracy.

Some focus on the local market with online games - free or subscription-based. Some sell game developing services like advergames production for the local advertising market (Brazilian advertising is considered one of the best in the world!). Others are focused on mobile gaming, trying to export as well as selling here in the main carriers.

Interama and I are focused on exporting our own titles, not only to North America. Maybe we could do some outsource as well, but the idea now is to create original IP. Just a couple of other developers are doing the same though - one of them is Insolita Studios. After all, it's very hard not having an internal market...

This is a pretty deep post.
I hate to say it, but I don't think I ever realized that software piracy is such an issue in Brazil. As an American, when I think of software piracy on the level you describe, I think of places in Asia -- places like China and Japan. Even though I've seen travel shows on TV that go to places like Rio and it looks like any modern city in America, I was actually kind of surprised to see that it's nothing like I expected. It just never occurred to me there was so much going on. This was very enlightening.

Do you find that software developers in Brazil have turned their focus on developing games that would sell well in North America, via the Internet, or are they more interested in keeping things local? I can imagine there must be a level of national pride to keep things geared toward Brazil, but there's always the chance of developing a large audience in North America that would bring in a lot of money. Is that kind of how things are going to make up for the loss in sales?

I remember reading reports on Tectoy, etc up until 1996 in the UK games press. Now I now why these disappeared afterwards.

Thank you for an informative and well-referenced article on an area of the games industry that often goes unreported.
